As you can imagine, the US presidential election campaign is also receiving a lot of attention in Europe. Of course, it is most noteworthy for us to know who could be the next top shot of the US, since the US does have a very considerable impact on the world´s development. But for us in Europe, there is also a very disturbing factor being noticed considering that there are many here that feel the US seems to have forgotten the “big picture” of a true democracy.

One can certainly argue that socialism hasn´t worked in the past and probably will not in future, but this extremely capitalistic approach to “democracy” which the US is demonstrating now, with their super PACs, and other donating groups or individuals, is also a bit unsettling. Can a president who is elected due to his billion dollar campaign truly be a representative of his nation? Or will he merely act in favor of his financier?

This article provides an example of one of these wealth donating individuals, Mr. Sheldon Adelson, who might be on track for an expansion of his power very soon. While such individuals do not necessarily pose any threat to the success of the US, Mr. Adelson does have quite a clear and prudent view on how things are developing:

“What scares me is the continuation of the socialist-style economy we´ve been experiencing for almost four years. That scares me because the redistribution of wealth is the path to more socialism, and to more of the government controlling people´s lives. What scares me is the lack of accountability that people would prefer to experience, just let the government take care of everything and I´ll go fish or I won´t work, etc.”

He goes on to say, in regards to influencing the election, “I´m against very wealthy people attempting to or influencing elections…But as long as it´s doable I´m going to do it”.

For us, US citizens should keep an eye on these types of developments and be aware of what may lie ahead.
